Metkovic

Metkovic
- This city and port on the lower course of the Neretva River, is situated 20
kilometres from the sea. The city centre is on the left bank of the river, on
the slopes of the Gledavac hill. Metkovic is an auxiliary port to the Port of
Ploce. Near Metkovic is Hutovo Blato (wetland), a renowned bird hunting ground.
The ornithological collection in Metkovic consists of about 300 specimens of
various bird species from Hutovo Blato and the Neretva Valley. The area of the
city of antiquity Narona (today Vid) stretched out to where Metkovic is today.
Metkovic was first mentioned under this name at the beginning of the 15th
century. The strong development of the town began in the late 17th century.
Since that time, Metkovic has been a bordering town for the Venetian and later
French and Austrian Dalmatia towards the Ottoman Empire. It received its urban
appearance of today in the 19th century. (For
